Background of the Study

Trauma cases are among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity globally, requiring immediate and skilled intervention. In Kano State, emergency units serve as critical points for the management of trauma patients, where nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring timely and effective care. Nurses’ preparedness, encompassing knowledge, skills, and emotional resilience, is fundamental to the success of trauma management.

Inadequate preparedness among nurses can result in delayed interventions, mismanagement, and poor patient outcomes. Studies (e.g., Adamu et al., 2023) have highlighted that factors such as insufficient training, limited resources, and high patient loads negatively impact nurses’ ability to manage trauma cases effectively. Assessing the current level of preparedness among nurses in Kano State is essential to identify gaps and recommend improvements.

Statement of the Problem

Trauma cases are on the rise in Kano State due to factors such as road traffic accidents, industrial incidents, and violent conflicts. Emergency units, often the first point of care, face challenges including limited infrastructure, staff shortages, and unprepared healthcare professionals. Nurses, being the primary caregivers in emergency units, are particularly affected by these challenges.

Despite the critical role of nurses in trauma care, there is limited research on their preparedness in managing trauma cases in Kano State. Understanding these gaps is vital for improving the quality of emergency care and reducing trauma-related fatalities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of preparedness among nurses in handling trauma cases in emergency units in Kano State.
  2. To identify factors affecting nurses’ preparedness for trauma care.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurses’ preparedness in trauma management.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of preparedness among nurses in handling trauma cases in emergency units in Kano State?
  2. What factors influence nurses’ preparedness for trauma care?
  3. What strategies can improve nurses’ preparedness in managing trauma cases?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in emergency units in Kano State are inadequately prepared to handle trauma cases.
  2. Factors such as training and resource availability significantly affect nurses’ preparedness for trauma care.
  3. Implementing targeted training programs improves nurses’ preparedness in managing trauma cases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on assessing the preparedness of nurses working in emergency units of selected healthcare facilities in Kano State. Limitations include variability in preparedness levels across hospitals and reliance on self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Preparedness: The state of being ready and equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to handle trauma cases.
  • Trauma Cases: Medical emergencies resulting from physical injuries caused by accidents, violence, or other critical incidents.
  • Emergency Units: Hospital departments designed to provide immediate medical care to critically ill or injured patients.
